Special Events

Costumed superhero parades. Meeting princess Ariel ‘under the sea’. Late nights for older kids…and two famous carnivals.

We dedicate at least one period on a weekly basis to special extravaganzas and activities that campers look forward to all summer long.

These events replace regular scheduling—so we ensure they’re extraordinary. Some are division-only, meeting specific age and gender needs (think Food Fight Olympics for Junior boys). Some are brand new, conceived and curated according to a fun whim or trend. Others are deeply anticipated traditions, like our 3-day camp Olympics, in play since 1956 (!). All provide kids with a true camp experience—and yet more precious memories.

Late Nights

Our campers enjoy their days at Deer Mountain so much, they often don’t want to leave. With Late Nights, they don’t have to!

Late Nights invite Juniors, Inters, Seniors, and Teens to enjoy our facilities—and divisional camaraderie—after camp hours. We develop special programming for these division specific events, which campers enjoy after a post-camp swim. Entertainers perform, counselors and campers suit up for a group vs. group “amazing race” through DMDC; older campers gather on our upper ballfield for a DMDC after dark “drive in” movie; kids play giant GaGa tournaments or divisional capture the flag; or we all just share stories and songs over s’mores and a crackling campfire.

All Late Nights include dinner and dessert. Parents pick up local campers, and we send van shuttles to NYC and other select areas." rel="lightbox[]">Late Nights

Theme Days & Events

Our campers and counselors get really into theme days at DMDC! We work hard to ensure they’re monumental, wildly creative, and pack a visual punch.

Theme Days aren’t just about camper dress-up—fun as that is (and plentiful, here at Deer Mountain). We add in detailed touches that make events come to vivid life. For example, the upper-camp Cruise Pool Party comes with a captain, social director, poolside buffet, games, contests, and cruise-appropriate music. At our preschool Under the Sea pool party, Nursery campers get a visit from princess Ariel herself, along with a giant octopus and other fun sea creatures.

Age-specific events grant campers once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Where else would adults and counselors egg on a food fight, or help kids douse a camp administrator in all things gooey? Bubble Madness gives nursery campers the magic of all things bubbly. Gold Rush encourages all Freshmen to hunt for treasure-and then bid for out-of-the-box prizes - think pancake party with Roberta and Carol.

All-camp events bring our community together. On one July 4th, we accumulated GIANT boxes, objects, and a market of supplies for our campers to use to make their own parade floats - followed, of course, by an actual parade. At the Original Superhero Runway Show, campers bestowed counselors with their very own superpowers, creating the costume to match and then presented their superheros to the rest of the camp during a parade down our red carpet.

Theme Days and Events are a truly special ingredient to the DMDC experience.

Expect your camper to arrive home and say, “Wow, I can’t believe we did this today at camp!” Your child will remember them forever." rel="lightbox[1]">IllustrationTheme Days & Events

Traditions

Deer Mountain is rich with history and tradition. Some of our favorite camp traditions have been around since Mel and Rita founded the camp in 1956. Today, Roberta and Carol carry on the torch—continuing these quintessential Deer Mountain experiences for campers through the generations.

Carnival

We have two carnivals at DMDC—one halfway through summer, and one at the end. It’s our director Roberta’s favorite part of the summer—and many of our campers’, too.

Mid-summer carnival will make your jaw drop. With cotton candy, snow cones, and buttery popcorn, it has all the fixings of a massive fair. Our upper fields are lined with huge rides and inflatables that campers can’t wait to get inside. As a tradition since our first carnival in 1956, campers create their own games and run them at booths throughout the event. Campers play games to win tickets, which they get to exchange for awesome prizes in the rec hall. We deck this out as a virtual department store to make the experience all the more real.

Carnival raises funds for Venture and Jawonio, camps for children with developmental disabilities. These kids enjoy our carnival before our campers do, and camper families are encouraged to donate money to the camps. DMDC matches all funds raised from the event, which we present at line-up later in the summer.

Late-summer Water Carnival, equally as big scale, unfolds during the last week of camp. With giant themed Aquatracks in each of our pools, water slides, dunk stations, elevated slippy slides, and more, it’s the celebration to tie up an incredible Deer Mountain summer." rel="lightbox[2]">Carnival

Olympics

DMDC Olympics are woven deeply into our camp tradition. Dating back to 1956, teams are represented by our original camp colors of green and white. But each camp session, these teams take on a new theme: Zeus v. Poseidon, Avengers v. Justice League, Flintstones v. Jetsons—the list goes on.

Nursery campers join in on the fun on the purple team, participating in their own specially designed Olympics at their developmental level. The rest of camp engages in wacky activities, friendly competition, and classic traditions over the course of three days. Olympics break out is always a surprise, and closing ceremonies combine talent and passion through all-camp songs and choreographed dances." rel="lightbox[3]">Olympics

Swim-a-thon

At Deer Mountain, we emphasize to our campers the importance of giving back. Every summer at our swim-a-thon, campers swim laps to raise money for cancer research. We donate all funds to the Moms in Training Group, an offshoot of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program. It’s a great way for campers to practice their swimming skills for a cause that truly matters." rel="lightbox[4]">Swim-a-thon

Staff Talent Show

There’s nothing our campers love more than to see our staff showcase their talents on stage. At the talent show, each division’s counselors, lifeguards, and specialists perform for our counselors and a panel of judges (our camp directors). Some performances are moving; some just plain hysterical. Each year, it brings camp together over shared laughs and pride for our staff." rel="lightbox[5]">Staff Talent Show
